Police: witness, videotape key in arrests in attack of Montee Ball

MADISON (WKOW) -- Court documents released Friday state a witness description and surveillance camera videotape linked three suspects to the attack on Badger football star Montee Ball.

Three suspects were arrested for the August 1 attack of Ball on University Avenue. The three Madison men -- Wendell J. Venerable, Deonte J. Wilson, and Robert A. Wilks -- are all 21 years old. They were arrested Tuesday, but were released from custody on Thursday, following bail hearings in a Dane County courtroom.

Probable Cause affidavits filed in connection with the arrests state witness Brendan Gould saw five people attack Ball, and later saw three of the suspects enter the nearby Saxony Apartment building on West Johnson Street. Venerable, Wilson and Wilks are identified as the three people in the affidavits.

The court records state the building's surveillance camera recorded the men entering the building fourteen minutes after the attack on Ball.

Records state Ball's nose was fractured and he was knocked unconscious. Officials said Ball also suffered a concussion.

Authorities have said the attack on Ball was probable retaliation for a fight at a party Ball attended, even though officials have said Ball was not involved in the fight. Other Badger football players attended the party as well. Sources have said Venerable was hurt in the party fight and briefly hospitalized.

According to the affidavits, Gould stated one attacker said, "One down, nine to go, you football players better watch out."

Venerable, Wilson and Wilks are scheduled to appear again in court next month to face criminal charges.
