Eau Claire (WQOW) -- For three quarters, the UW-Eau Claire looked in control of 8th-ranked St. Thomas. But a fourth quarter meltdown gave the Blugolds their first loss of the season.
Eau Claire held an eleven point lead with four minutes left in the game, but ultimately loss 27-24. It is a tough loss for the Blugolds, but the game also shows the UWEC can compete with the best teams in the country.
"There's a reason they're ranked 8th in the country, they're a good football team," says coach Todd Glaser. "We've got to learn from our mistakes. We can't play like that. You have to play four quarters against good football teams and that's what we have in our league. That's why we play the competition we do in non-conference. "
"We have another tough game next weekend so we just have to try to shake this one off and come out strong for the rest of the season. We have a good team, we know that now. We just have to play the whole game," adds junior safety Coltan Ellis.
The Blugolds look to get back on track on Saturday, September 8th against St. Johns.
