First Lady will headline Tuesday night's DNC kickoff

Posted:

(ABC News) - Democrats are gathering in North Carolina Tuesday morning for the kickoff to the Democratic National Convention.  The first day of the convention will spotlight First Lady Michelle Obama.

"I'll admit, I'm a little biased because I think our President is awesome!" said Michelle Obama.

The Obama campaign has long referred to Mrs. Obama as "the closer." She ran through her convention speech Monday and must convince America Tuesday night her husband is taking the country in the right direction.

It's a similar opening night to last week's Republican convention, when Ann Romney painted her husband as a likeable guy.

"I can tell you that Mitt Romney was not handed success," said Ann Romney. "He built it."

When the gavel strikes on the Democratic convention stage, the president will be in midst of his "Road to Charlotte Campaign Tour," touting his efforts to bring the economy back.

"I stood with American workers. I stood with American manufacturing. I believed in you," said President Obama in Toledo, Ohio on Monday.

Other speakers Tuesday night will do the same, including Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the key note speaker, San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro.

"The most challenging part of the speech is not even the words themselves, it's just having command of the actual arena," said Castro, after touring the DNC stage.

The 37-year-old is an up-and-comer within the Democratic party and is taking the same prime time slot that shot another young Democrat into political stardom in 2004: President Obama.

Vice President Joe Biden arrives in Charlotte Tuesday. He will deliver his speech Thursday night, right before President Obama accepts the Democratic nomination.
