Chippewa County (WQOW) - Chippewa County can check a few maintenance issues off its list thanks to money the county didn't have to pay to the railroads.
The county says its board had previously approved giving $800,000 to the West Wisconsin Rail Transit Authority. But that dissolved once Canadian National stepped in and offered to privately pay to fix up the tracks to ship frac sand. So the county is instead using that money to replace a cooling system in the Chippewa County Courthouse, nearly doubling the size of the district attorney's office, and fixing cracked limestone on the courthouse building. The county believes when the limestone was put in 20 years ago, it wasn't done right.
"We are reviewing options to see who is responsible but it's to the point where it's 20 years old," says Chippewa County Administrator Frank Pascarella. "We don't believe we can go after either the contractor or the architect. It's going to be our responsibility to maintain, so we are looking at what those costs would be."
Some of the work has already begun and all of it is expected to be completed by the end of 2014.
