Eau Claire (WQOW) - Area residents took a walk for a good cause today, and raised a record amount to find a cure for diabetes.
The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's ninth annual Walk to Cure Diabetes was held in Carson Park today. Several hundred people showed up to the event. According to the JDRF, Type 1 diabetes affects as many as 3 million Americans.
"Diabetes is a 24/7 struggle, you never get a break, and it's never easy. So a cure would mean a whole lot, because you have to count your carbs for everything that you eat, and you have to give yourself insulin injections to live," said Katie Rhoten, who has Type 1 diabetes.
WQOW's own Jerry Gallagher was an emcee at the event, which helped raise a record of more than $64,000 to find a cure.
