Jackson County (Press Release) - On Sunday September 10, 2012 at 6:42 a.m. the Jackson County Sheriff's authorities were summoned to the scene of a single vehicle crash in the Town of Garfield in Jackson County.

The crash was reported to be on County Highway B near W. Hillcrest Road. The  caller was riding a bicycle in the area when the crash was discovered.

The Jackson County Sheriff's Office and the City of Osseo Police responded to the scene as well as the Osseo Fire Department.

Upon arrival, responding deputies found a lone vehicle that had left the roadway. Upon further inspection, authorities found that the vehicle was occupied by a lone occupant/driver.

Despite rescue efforts the driver was found to be dead at the scene.

Investigation into the crash revealed that the involved vehicle was traveling west on County Highway B .4 miles west of West Hillcrest Road. While attempting to negotiate a curve in the roadway, the vehicle left the roadway and crashed into several large trees. The driver of the vehicle was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

The driver of the vehicle has been identified as 29-year-old Matthew R. Schermerhorn of Osseo.

Authorities believe that alcohol and speed may have been factors in the crash.

This is the third motor vehicle fatality investigated by the Jackson County Sheriff's Office since August of this year.
