Eau Claire (Eau Claire County Sheriff's Office) - The Eau Claire County Sheriff's Office is pleased to announce it has completed the transfer of all secure inmates to the newly constructed jail building located at 710 Second Avenue and the jail is now fully operational.

A total of 146 secure inmates were transferred to the new facility.  This included 122 from the vacated Eau Claire facility and 24 from the Chippewa County Jail.  The  Eau Claire County Sheriff's Department would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank the Chippewa and Dunn County Sheriff's Departments and staff for their assistance with housing our inmates over the last several years.  Their professionalism and willingness to assist is commendable.

Eau Claire (WQOW) - Over a year of construction and a few minor setbacks later, Eau Claire County's new jail is officially complete.

The new jail was originally set to start housing inmates two weeks ago, but was waiting on several pieces of reflective security glass.  The glass panels had been delivered three times, and each time, the glass was broken. Security electronics also had to be finished so jailers could complete their training.

Now, Mel Erickson, head of the county's Planning and Development Department, says the new jail has passed inspection.

The jail captain says inmates started being moved into the new jail late Tuesday afternoon and will continue Wednesday morning. The renovation of the third floor, where the inmates are currently being housed, will begin next week.

The county says the delays should not add to the price tag.  The entire jail and courthouse remodeling project is expected to cost more than $58 million, and could wrap up by September of next year
