Hudson (WQOW) - Prison time has been ordered for a Hudson
couple that orchestrated a $6 million mortgage fraud scheme in Minnesota.
James and Wendy Ober were sentenced to almost 7 years in
prison. This is what they'd do: the Obers would
find homes in foreclosure which the bank had bought at a low price during a
sheriff's sale.
Under Minnesota law, the owners have a limited time to
buy their house back at a lower price. The couple would then use straw
buyers to buy the properties at a low price. These straw buyers had no
intention of owning the house.
In every case, the Obers would take out
second mortgages and get kickbacks. They were able to secure new
mortgages using the identities of other people.
The court ordered the couple to
pay $500,000 in restitution. The Obers apologized to their
victims in court.
