Eau Claire (WQOW) - County budget negotiations could send us down a familiar road.
On Monday, Eau Claire County Administrator Tom McCarty submitted his budget recommendations for 2013. The report offers a balanced budget and suggests a new revenue stream be considered. The example given was a county vehicle registration fee (or wheel tax) which could be used to offset transportation costs.
That idea has been brought up before in recent years. Two years ago, the proposal was for a $10 fee. It would've raised about $500,000 in the first year. The county board put the brakes on that proposal at the time.
Some other notes from the McCarty's budget recommendations: A property tax increase of 1.08%. That comes to $5.70 more on a $100,000 home. The budget proposal also recommends $5 million for highway projects, from resurfacing to rebuilding a number of roads. Human Services requested money in a number of areas the administrator did not recommend approval for, including more funding to support mental health for at-risk adults.
