Eau Claire County (WQOW)- A grass fire in Eau Claire County could have been worse if not for a neighbor.
Fire fighters from several area departments were called to a brush fire north of Fall Creek on Riverview Drive. The fire started in a wooded area about a mile off the road and burned a little more than two acres. Firefighters say they had trouble getting to the site and dry weather and wind made fighting the flames difficult.
"We were worried about the high winds pushing the fire and it did. It did push the fire it the fire, made it a little bit bigger. It's about two and a half acres which doesn't sound very big but it's the access to it because of the wooded area and it's down the sloped embankment by the river. Then all this dry fuel with all the pine trees and all the ground cover. The ground cover is very thick and the pine trees are very dry. So with the dry conditions and the wind combined it really made for a really fast moving fire," says Jason Knecht, Altoona Fire Department.
Firefighters believe a camp fire may have sparked the flames, but are still investigating. Right now the fire danger across Wisconsin is listed as low to moderate. Washburn County is the only county listed as high.
