Eau Claire (WQOW)- A new bicycle ordinance could soon be enforced in the city.
The City of Eau Claire has been looking into an ordinance that would add bicycle parking standards for new businesses and apartment buildings. Under the plan, new site plans would need to include one bicycle space for every ten vehicle parking spaces. It would also set requirements for the style of bike rack and spacing.
Members of a bicycle committee say it will help make it easier for business owners to accommodate bicycles.
"It's encouraging to have a document that spells out what the bike should look like once they're installed. We've been approaching businesses for the past several years encouraging them to put in bike racks and one of the first questions they always have is, "what should I put in, where should I put it, how should it look," and this ordinance is going to go a long way to help them understand what a good instillation looks like. They don't want to put in a bike rack that people aren't going to use," says Brad Henderson, bicyclist.
A public hearing will be held at the City Council meeting on Monday before the council votes on the proposal at its meeting on Tuesday. The Plan Commission voted in favor of the ordinance last week.
