Probable human case of West Nile Virus in Polk County - WQOW TV: Eau Claire, WI NEWS18 News, Weather, and Sports

Western Wisconsin (WQOW) - A man from Polk County is recovering from a probable case of West Nile virus.

The county's health officer says the man went to the doctor last month with fever, fatigue and muscle aches.  A blood draw showed that he, most likely, had West Nile, but the state is still waiting for blood work from the CDC before calling it a confirmed case.  The man was not hospitalized and is feeling better.

The state has had two confirmed human cases this year with 23 probable cases.

Until it is consistently cold out, there is still a very slight risk of mosquito-borne illnesses so continue with prevention efforts, i.e. repellent with DEET at dawn and dusk; empty outdoor pots and bird baths so environment not good for mosquito larvae; fix torn screens so mosquitoes can't get inside; wear protective clothing if in mosquito infected areas.  Mosquito season should soon be behind us for 2012!
