Mixed reviews on new school lunches

Posted:

WAUSAU (WKOW) -- We're just getting started with this school year and already changes in the lunchroom are getting mixed reviews. Some say the new regulations go too far.

New federal standards this year require schools to serve more nutritious meals. That means a mandatory serving of fruit or vegetables and cutting back on salt and sugar.

But, the plan also brings calorie count way down, and for some students it's just not enough food.

"Being an athlete, being more active you want more food to keep you going once in a while, get that energy in you," says student Kaleb Laurent.

Food service leaders say they recognize some kids need more at lunch and so they offer extra items to buy. But, they say so far the changes are helping to teach kids healthier eating habits.

"As educators we need to implement and reinforce healthy options," says Food Service Supervisor Christine Welsh.
