Hunters asked to find new way to dispose of deer carcases

Northwestern Wisconsin (WQOW) - Hunters who get a deer in some northwestern counties are being asked to take some extra precautions this year.

The DNR is out Thursday with some new recommendations to deal with carcasses of deer that are killed in Barron, Burnett, Polk, and Washburn counties. A deer found near Shell Lake tested positive for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) earlier this year.  

In the past, landowners have been allowed to dump deer carcasses on their land. But to help prevent the spread of the disease the DNR says they should be buried at least three feet deep to prevent scavengers from digging them up. The other option is to bag the carcass and put it out for garbage pickup. Haulers in those four counties use landfills that accept deer waste.
