Chippewa Falls, Chippewa County consolidating emergency dispatch services

Chippewa County (WQOW) - Two emergency dispatch centers in the area are merging.

The City of Chippewa Falls and Chippewa County have agreed to consolidate 911 dispatch services.  Officials say while the city council and county board will need to take formal action in November, the merger is expected to be approved. A merger has been talked about for years to save money and improve safety. The county will take over operations in January.  City dispatchers will be required to apply for a job with the county.

Chippewa County (Press Release) - The City of Chippewa Falls and Chippewa County wish to announce that in 2013, the City of Chippewa Falls emergency dispatch services for police and fire protection services will be consolidated into the Chippewa County Sheriff's Department emergency 911 Dispatch Center. Although this consolidation still requires approval of both the City Council and the County Board in November, there is widespread support of both legislative bodies and it is anticipated that the consolidation will be approved.

This consolidation has been discussed for many years and after a good deal of cooperative meetings between the elected officials and officers of the City and County, the goal of a consolidated dispatch will be coming to fruition in January.

There will be no interruption in services to either the residents of Chippewa Falls or to the other residents of Chippewa County as a result of this consolidation. The City and County have been working diligently to insure that the transition is smooth and that the ultimate goal of consolidation will actually lead to enhanced emergency 911 services. To help insure this goal, the City will have a representative on the 911 Policies and Procedures Board to represent the interests of the citizens of Chippewa Falls.

The City anticipates that by moving its dispatch services to the County, there will be an overall cost savings for the City and the taxpayers of Chippewa Falls. In addition, the County will be receiving a tax levy transfer from the City to help offset the cost of the wages and fringe benefits of the new county employees.

The City and County are pleased to announce this consolidation and the joint efforts of the elected officials and officers of these two municipalities that made it happen. This is an example of how intergovernmental cooperation can lead to more cost effective and improved services for our citizens.
