Minnesota man killed in crash in Altoona

Altoona (WQOW) - We now know the name of a man who died following an accident in Altoona.

The crash happened Wednesday night.  Altoona's police chief says Roger Zwart was making a left-hand turn onto Highway 12 when his car was hit by a pickup truck pulling a trailer loaded with hay bales.  Zwart, who was from Minnesota, was taken to the hospital, but died from his injuries. He was 77 years old.  Two passengers in the car were also taken to the hospital, one of them with life-threatening injuries.  No one in the truck was injured.

Altoona (Press Release) - The Altoona Police Department releases the following information based upon preliminary investigation of the crash that occurred on US 12 on 09/26/12:

A White 2005 Buick driven by Roger J Zwart, 77, of Longville, MN was southbound on McCann Dr and entered US 12 to make a left hand turn to travel Eastbound.  While attempting to cross traffic the Buick was struck in the driver's side door by a 2001 Dodge Ram pick up driven by Alan R Ross, 37, Fall Creek.   The truck was pulling a large trailer carrying two round hay bales.

It appears the crash was due to the vehicle driven by Roger Zwart failing to yield to the oncoming pick up truck.  Speed and alcohol WERE NOT factors in the crash.  All occupants in both vehicles were wearing seat belts.
