Lawsuit alleges legislators violated open records law

MADISON (WKOW) -- Two political watchdog groups filed an open records lawsuit in Dane County Court on Monday against five Republican state legislators who are also members of the American Legislative and Exchange Council, better known as ALEC.

The lawsuit, filed by the Center for Media and Democracy along with Common Cause, alleges that the legislators failed to produce ALEC-related emails sought under Wisconsin's Open Records Law.

CMD and Common Cause sent open records requests to all known members of ALEC in the Wisconsin State Legislature on September 11, 2012, asking for all ALEC-related legislative correspondence sent via government and personal email accounts.

The lawsuit alleges that Rep. Jeremy Thiesfeldt (R-Fond du Lac), Rep. Tyler August (R-Lake Geneva), Rep. Dan Knodl (R-Germantown), Rep. Tom Larson (R-Colfax) and Rep. Pat Strachota (R-West Bend) all refused to provide correspondence from their personal email accounts.

CMD and Common Cause assert that is a violation of the state's Open Records Law.
