Medicare fining hospitals for too many readmissions

Eau Claire (WQOW)- Another piece of President Obama's health care reform act is taking effect.

Starting Monday Medicare will fine hospitals if too many patients are re-admitted within 30 days of discharge because of complications. This is part of the Affordable Care Act and an effort to improve quality of care, while also trying to save taxpayers money.

The government estimates as many as 2,200 facilities could be hit with penalties.

Health care reform was also the topic of a town hall meeting in Eau Claire.

On Monday  the 60 Plus Association made a stop in Eau Claire.  The group is looking to get support to repeal the president's health care law.  Around 100 people were at the Eau Claire County Expo Center for the event.

"There are lots of good things in the bill, portability of insurance across state lines, pre-existing conditions, we agree with all of that, but there's an awful lot of bad things in that bill. For example, the independent payment advisory board, 15 unelected bureaucrats who will have the final say of what medicines maybe available for seniors based on cost and cost alone," says Jim Martin, 60 Plus Association.

The group also opposes taxes on medical devices and would like to see a measure limiting lawsuits against doctors.
