Chippewa Falls (Press Release) - On
October 3, 2012 at approximately 10:07 a.m. the Chippewa Falls Police Department
received a request from the Eau Claire Police Department to check the welfare
of Daniel J. Heyde. Officers checked locations where Heyde was known to have
been in the past.
At approximately 10:46 a.m. officers checked 618½ Allen Street
and were able to determine that a person was inside the apartment, but would
not come to the door. Contact was made with the current tenant for that address
and they confirmed that Heyde was likely in the apartment and that there was a
firearm in the apartment.
Officers secured the area, evacuated neighbors and
the downstairs tenant and attempted to make contact with Heyde. Eventually
contact was made with Heyde through a third party and Heyde indicated he did
have a shotgun.
Officers continued to negotiate with Heyde and Heyde eventually
indicated he would come out of the apartment.
Shortly after that a gunshot was
heard from within the apartment. Within a minute or two of the shot being fired
Heyde exited the apartment carrying the shotgun.
Heyde subsequently dropped the
shotgun when ordered to do so by police and was taken into custody. Heyde was
the only person in the apartment at the time of the incident and investigating
officers did find a hole in a wall from the discharge of a firearm.
No one was
injured in the incident.
Police will be asking the District Attorney's Office
to file charges against Heyde for various weapon violations.
