Eau Claire
(WQOW)- The YMCA is re-vamping its plans for a new building. After years of
fundraising for a new facility near Carson
Park the Y is looking at
a brand new location.
The Y is planning to propose a land swap to the city council on Tuesday. The
original plan was for the Y to build a new facility on land it purchased near
the Menomonie Street
entrance to Carson
Park. However, that plan
received negative feedback from residents who don't want to see the natural
beauty of the area disturbed. The Y now is focused on a site near the Galloway
and Birch Street
intersection of River Prairie
Drive.
"It doesn't obviously have the lake, but it does have the river, it's
right on the bike trail, easy access of the bike path. So we feel this is a
very viable site, and we look forward to getting a building built," said
Ken Van Es the Executive Director of the YMCA.
After the city council hears the proposal, it is expected to refer the issue
to the Waterways and Parks Commission. The Y says the cost to build a new
facility in the River Prairie
Drive area would be around $15 million. So far,
they've raised about $8 million.
