MADISON (WKOW) -- Calls about child abuse are on the rise in Dane County, and social workers are opening more case investigations.
The numbers are so much higher, Dane County Executive Joe Parisi has recommended more money in the budget for Child Protective Services to hire three new social workers.
Julie Ahnen, Manager for CPS in Dane County, says calls to their office about child abuse increased 25% from last year to this year. Case openings increased 15% in the last year, and of those, emergency response cases increased 16%. Those are cases where social workers worry about the safety of a child and someone responds to the home either that day or within 24 hours.
Ahnen says the county board still has to review the proposal submitted by Parisi. She says in the meantime, her staff is busier, but have been able to handle the increased caseload.
