Group works to eliminate waste at Badger games

MADISON (WKOW) -- A group of volunteers at Saturday's football game at University of Wisconsin-Madison were focused on eliminating waste.

They are taking part in the Be the WE program, with the WE standing for waste elimination.

At UW-Madison and other universities, groups have implemented waste reduction programs on game days. They say they are helping educate fans about eliminating waste and recycling.

Organizers say fans generate an average of 22-thousand pounds of waste at a Badger home game.

"We're recycling here on campus, we recycle here in Wisconsin," said Duayne Williams from the Be the WE program. "We're winners when we drop a bottle in the recycle bin."

The campus program is a partnership between the  UW-Madison Athletic Department, the campus Office of Sustainability and We Conserve program.
