Town Shop, Town Hall building damaged in fire

Jackson County (Press Release) - On October 8, 2012 at 11:43 a.m. the Jackson County Emergency Dispatch Center (EDC) paged for a structure fire at N3291Nichols Road which is located in the Township of Irving in Jackson County.

The EDC was reporting that flames were coming from the Township Shop - Town Hall building at this address.

Upon arrival the department found fire a burning in the southwest corner around the frame of a large overhead shop door of the metal frame building. Open flames were also found burning on the inside wall from floor to ceiling of the building in the same corner.

The department made an offensive attack on the fire which was held to the southwest corner of the building with a 1.75" attack line.

The structure is used as both the Township Shop as well as the Town Hall. The fire occurred and was held to the shop area of the building and the attached meeting area of the building did have moderate smoke damage. It appears the road maintenance equipment stored in the shop area also may have smoke damage.

The Department was on the fire scene for 3.5 hours with seven Firefighters and was assisted with a mutual aid tender from the Melrose Fire Department.

There were no injuries reported during the fire.

The cause of the fire is believed to be related to some pavement maintenance work that had been done by a contractor a few hours earlier.

A damage estimate is not known at this time and the building was insured.
