Eau Claire (WQOW) - Plans for a new YMCA could be getting a change of scenery.
On Tuesday, the YMCA proposed a land swap with the City of Eau Claire. The Y had purchased land from the city off Menomonie Street to build a new facility. Now the Y is looking to swap that land with the city, for land on Galloway Street near River Prairie Drive.
Tuesday, all but one city council member gave the go ahead to further look into the property. Council member Kathy Mitchell explained why she couldn't give her support. "Land that could be developed and put on the tax roles, will now be developed by the Y and not available for the tax roles. So, I don't see this as a win-win at all. I see this as a lose-lose situation," says Mitchell.
The issue will now make its way to waterways and parks and the plan commission. The Y says the cost to build a new facility in the River Prairie Drive area would be around $15 million. So far, they've raised about $8 million.
