Increasing demand for Thanksgiving baskets

Posted:

MADISON (WKOW) -- Madison's Goodman Community Center is once again providing Thanksgiving baskets to families who fall within federal poverty guidelines or find themselves in need this holiday season.

Goodman Center Executive Director Becky Steinhoff says demand for the baskets has increased over last year. More than 2,000 families have requested assistance, so far this year, compared to the roughly 1,600 families the Goodman Center was able to help in 2011. And, what has been startling, according to Steinhoff, is the number of families with children requesting help this year. Steinhoff says those are the families to which the Center gives preference when distributing the baskets.

Families have till Monday, October 15, to request a Thanksgiving basket. They can call the center's Fritz Food Pantry at 241-1574, ext. 249; register at select schools; or they can go to Fritz Food pantry in person to register until 3:00 p.m. Thursday., October 11.

Steinhoff says Monetary and food donations determine how many baskets Goodman Community Center can provide. You can find a shopping list and other information at the center's website

The center is accepting food donations through Friday, November 16, and distribution of the baskets will begin the following day.

Steinhoff believes Goodman Community Center is now the only organization in Dane County's food pantry network providing full-meal Thanksgiving baskets, which she says helps explain the increased demand for the baskets in recent years.
