FAA investigates Wausau plane crash, pilot released from hospital

WAUSAU (WAOW) - The pilot involved in a plane crash in Wausau has been released from the hospital.

According to a nursing supervisor at Aspirus, Randall Pack was released and moved closer to home in the Milwaukee area.

Meantime, authorities are still trying to determine exactly how the plane crashed Wednesday morning.

It was the type of call that emergency crews say is hard to prepare for.

"We didn't know where the plane was," Wausau Battalion Chief Mark Krueger said. "So, we had various people looking on the outskirts of the property for the aircraft."

Authorities say around 8:30 Wednesday morning a single engine plane was on its way to Wausau from Waukesha. But, before the pilot reached the runway, the plane crashed into a nearby wooded area.

"The weather conditions had deteriorated by the time he was supposed to come in but its too early to tell if that played a factor in it," Airport Manager John Chmiel said.

Authorities say the pilot, Randall Pack, was the only one on board the six passenger plane. When emergency crews arrived on scene, they say he was lying outside the aircraft.

"The portion where he landed wasn't as steep and immediately below the plane," Krueger said.

Since the crash, officials from the FAA have been investigating the crash scene. Authorities say their investigation could take months to complete.

The pilot was transported to a nearby hospital. He's been released.
