CHICAGO (WKOW) -- Test runs for the high-speed rail are scheduled to start along a small section of the Amtrak line between Chicago and St. Louis. The test will reach 110 miles per hour on Friday.

The 110 miles per hour will be a 30 mile-per-hour increase from the route's current top speed. Some rail experts question whether the route can become profitable, or whether it will pose serious competition to air and automobile travel.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood and Governor Pat Quinn will be on board during the test run when speeds reach 110 miles per hour. The test will run for 15 miles.
