MADISON (WKOW) -- Madison police say a mother is facing child neglect charges after her three kids were found walking along Cottage Grove Road Friday evening.
Police say a 911 call was placed after two vehicles swerved to avoid hitting the kids.
Authorities say two boys, ages 5 and 6, and their 2-year-old sister were warned by one passerby to stay out of the roadway. A second motorist gave the older boy her coat and shoes as he wore neither in the 45-degree temperatures.
Police say that motorist stayed with the children for ten minutes, hoping to locate a parent. When no one showed up, she called 911. Police say 45 minutes later, an officer located the mother who was in a nearby apartment building drinking alcohol with a friend. She told the officer that she must have lost track of time.
Authorities say the children's mother was arrested for child neglect. Dane County Human Services was also contacted and the children were given to a trusted relative.
