Sheriff Dept. cover-up leads to discipline against 9 employees

Burnett County (WQOW) - More information is coming out about the internal investigation that led to discipline against nine employees of the Burnett County Sheriff's Department. The sheriff calls it a case of cover-up of a fellow deputy's actions.

Two deputies and a dispatcher were fired. Five others were disciplined. And one faces possible criminal charges.

The investigation began when a neighboring sheriff's department notified the Burnett County sheriff that one of his deputies was being investigated for child sexual assault. That deputy's girlfriend had also complained that Burnett County deputies were dispatched to two domestic disturbances caused by the deputy, but that no action was ever taken against him.

The arbitrator has just ruled that two dispatchers violated policy by failing to preserve 911 phone calls from the incidents, and keeping the deputy's name out of reports.

The deputy at the center of the case is on paid administrative leave pending a decision on whether he will face criminal charges.
