SUN PRAIRIE (WKOW) -- Two schools were on lockdown for a short time Monday during a police search for several theft suspects.
Just after 2 p.m., the Sun Prairie Police Department received a report of a theft of a hunting rifle from a vehicle. Reports indicated the owner of the rifle was chasing the three suspects.
Officers responded to the 400 block of S. Bird Street. After a short search they found the rifle in the exterior stairwell of an apartment building.
During the search for the suspects and the rifle, Cardinal Heights Upper Middle School and Prairie Phoenix Academy were put on lockdown for about 15 minutes due to their close proximity to the search area. Police say at no time were students or faculty in danger.
The Sun Prairie Police Department says the suspects have been identified and the case remains under investigation.
