UW to unveil Bob Johnson rink Friday

MADISON (WKOW) -- Friday night will be a special one at the Kohl Center.

The Badger men's hockey team hosts Colorado College in its home opener, and the team will unveil the new Bob Johnson rink.

The ice sheet at the Kohl Center is being named for the legendary coach, 'Badger Bob' Johnson.

He led the Badgers to seven NCAA tournaments and won three championships.

It's been more than 20 years since Badger Bob lost his battle with brain cancer in 1991.

His son, Mark Johnson, head coach of the UW women's hockey team, says Friday's ceremony will be a moving tribute to the man he called dad.

"You really don't appreciate things as much as you should until they're gone. I remember having to speak at his funeral in Colorado Springs. A lot of people were in attendance, but you start talking to some of the people and some of the stories they share with you... and you really start to appreciate at that time what he meant to me as a dad but more importantly what he meant to the hockey community that he was able to touch so strongly," Johnson said.

A member of the Johnson family will drop the ceremonial puck for Friday's game, which is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Kohl Center.
