UPDATE: Driver arrested for OWI in deputy crash was underage

BROOKFIELD (WKOW) -- The driver taken into custody on suspicion of drunk driving after slamming into the back of a sheriff's vehicle was underage.

WISN reports the 18-year-old was driving a Saab on I-94 near Sunnyslope Road in Brookfield early Thursday morning, when the teenager crossed into the median and struck the back of the squad car.

The two Waukesha County sheriff's deputies inside were injured and taken to Froedtert Hospital. They were later released.

Waukesha County Sheriff's officials say the driver was also taken to a Waukesha hospital. The 18-year-old was later taken into custody on suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, according to the Wisconsin State Patrol.

A passenger in the Saab, a 17-year-old, was taken to Children's Hospital by Flight for Life with critical injuries.

The State Patrol is investigating.


BROOKFIELD (WKOW) -- Three people, including two sheriff's deputies, were hurt in a fiery crash on the interstate in Waukesha County.

The State Patrol says the two deputies were inside the median along I-94 when a vehicle hit the back of their squad and caught fire about 3 a.m. Thursday.

WTMJ radio says the deputies were transported to Froedtert Hospital. A passenger in the car that caught fire was taken to Children's Hospital.

Authorities arrested the driver of the car on suspicion of drunken driving. There's no immediate word on the conditions of the injured.

The crash temporarily closed the interstate near Sunny Slope Road.
