Sandy threatens to destroy medical research

NEW YORK (WKOW) -- Researchers at NYU Medical Center try to save years of research into heart disease, cancer and other diseases as well as priceless lab specimens that were put in jeopardy by Hurricane Sandy.

NYU Medical Center lost power shortly after Sandy hit Monday night. Back-up generators failed and the Manhattan hospital evacuated 300 patients on Monday. Cells, tissues and animals used for medical research were left to die in failing refrigerators, freezers and incubators.

New York City's Bellevue Hospital Center has been evacuated. Hundreds of patients were forced to go to other hospitals because of flood waters. Bellevue decided to make the move after failing power, partially lit halls and no computers.

Bellevue is the third hospital forced to move patients because of Hurricane Sandy. ABC News reports it's the best known of the 11 hospitals that make up New York City's public hospital system.
