Many students back to school in NYC

NEW YORK, NY (WKOW) -- After Superstorm Sandy brought life to a halt on the east coast a week ago, most students went back to class Monday in New York City.

But 100 schools are still closed.

That means about 73,000 of the more than 1 million students stayed home Monday.

Their schools are either damaged from the storm or still without electricity.

Others are being used as shelters for people left homeless by Sandy.

"It's so hard to have a decent home without power, without water, without food, but we're still alive," says Evelyn Oliveres who is one of the many seeking shelter in the school buildings.

Schools in New York City will be closed again Tuesday for the elections.

Officials hope to have more of those remaining 100 back open to students by Wednesday.
