Speaker of the House pledges to work with Obama

WASHINGTON (WKOW) -- Speaker of the House John Boehner pledges to work with President Barack Obama.

His openness comes in response to a fiscal cliff the nation faces in January. Time runs out for lawmakers to avoid about $7 trillion dollars in automatic spending cuts and tax increases. House Speaker Boehner says he's talked to President Obama and proposed a way to avoid the fiscal cliff.

The combination of spending cuts and tax increases will kick in on January 1. House Speaker Boehner says to avoid that, we need bipartisan support.

According to ABC News, President Obama talked with congressional leaders about his commitment to finding bipartisan solutions to reduce our deficit, cut taxes for middle-class families and small businesses and create jobs.

Boehner made it clear it's a mandate for the government to work together to find solutions to problems that all Americans face.

President Obama says he believes the American people sent a message in Tuesday's election that leaders in both parties need to put aside their partisan interests and work together. Congress remains divided with Republicans keeping control of the House of Representatives and Democrats holding onto the Senate.
