Eau Claire (WQOW)-Giving back to the community is something to be celebrated. Those who make that a priority were honored in Eau Claire.
The 18th annual Celebration of Philanthropy was held Thursday at the Florian Gardens. The event honors those who are dedicated to giving back to their community. This year's 'Outstanding Philanthropist' award went to the Barland family, and the 'Youth Philanthropist' award went to Katie Rhoten, who was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when she was 9-years-old.
"I was in the hospital, and I was very scared, and I was away from home, and I was very sick, and every time I would get an IV or a poke, I would get a stuffed animal," recalls Katie. "That brought some comfort to me, so I thought I should bring that back to Eau Claire and start that, so I raised stuffed animals, toys, and books, and I give them to children receiving medical care."
Katie recently won the Jefferson Award for public service for starting a non-profit called Katharine's Wish. To learn more click
