Bret Bielema Names Curt Phillips As UW'S Starting QB

Madison (WQOW) -- Wisconsin head coach Bret Bielema makes it official Thursday night: Curt Phillips will start at quarterback for the Badgers when Wisconsin visits Indiana, Saturday.

This will be Phillips' first start in his five years at Wisconsin, completing a remarkable comeback from 3 torn ACL injuries.  It'll be the first time since 1987 that three different quarterbacks have started for the Badgers in a single season.

"Curt really found some rhythm on Thursday and a little in Wednesday as well when we did some good-on-good," Bielema says, "obviously, he brings a little different skill set - you've all seen what he can do - so it's any opportunity for him. It may not be a traditional Wisconsin offense - you'll see some different things - but it's obviously something we're excited to see. Everybody on both sides of the ball is yelling for Curt and the receivers and the offense in there to really play well. I said that all week - for our players, for our coaches, it's a rally week. It's a chance to rally around our starting quarterback -- offense, defense, special teams have all got to be a part of it."

Bielema also says Phillips has applied for a medical redshirt which would allow for a 6th year of eligibility, since he already redshirted his freshman year.
