Veterans honored at state Capitol

MADISON (WKOW) -- Governor Scott Walker honored veterans Friday in the Capitol rotunda.

The governor delivered remarks at a Veterans Day ceremony. The event honored a purple heart recipient and all those who have served in the armed forces.

Walker began his remarks by thanking the men and women who serve our nation, specifically those from Wisconsin.

"It's the courage of our ancestors that inspired our soldiers, and airmen, and Marines, and sailors, and members of the Coast Guard yet today. It is that courage that we honor and respect, and lift up, and ultimately give thanks for in ceremonies like this," Walker said during his address.

Major General Donald Dunbar, adjutant general of Wisconsin, also spoke at the ceremony. He said we owe a debt of gratitude to those who have consistently defended our freedom.

"Veterans Day is not in celebration of victory; rather it is a celebration of those who make victory possible. It's a day when we remember the brave men and women who have served and defended this great nation," Dunbar said.

This year's theme for the observance was the "Year of the Veteran."

There are more than 400,000 veterans living in Wisconsin and nearly 300,000 are wartime veterans.
