Eau Claire (WQOW) - While the traditional New Year
celebration is over a month away, the festivities began early on the UW Eau
Claire campus this morning.
The Eau Claire Hmong community
started their annual New Year celebration at the McPhee Center
today. The event features traditional Hmong music, festivities, and food. The
holiday began as a month long festival to celebrate the end of the harvest
season. Locally, the event is more about showing off Hmong culture.
"It's the one
celebration of the year where people get to dress up in their traditional Hmong
clothes. Us being here in America,
we don't get a chance to do that every day, so you'll see a lot of little kids
in their Hmong costumes, a lot of elders in Hmong costumes. It's a time to just
enjoy being Hmong and getting to wear and showcase your Hmong clothing and
customs and traditions," said Pa Thao, The Eau Claire Area Hmong Mutual Assistance
Association's Executive Director.
The New Year celebration will
continue tomorrow at the McPhee
Center. It opens at 8:30
a.m. and runs until 4 p.m.
