Menomonie, Eau Claire (WQOW) -- The local college basketball seasons start up later this week, with the teams from UW-Eau Claire & UW-Stout getting ready for their respective campaigns.
The Blue Devils men's team holds hits annual Blue & White game Monday night at Johnson Fieldhouse. For the record, the Blue beats the White, 72-61.
Head coach Ed Andrist is beginning his 13th season at UW-Stout, and he says his team will be tested early.
"If we're going to be successful," Andrist says, "we're going to have to play some really good teams early. It's a good situation for us. We have some good NAIA schools that we're playing and some schools that are very strong, and we're just going to have to take care of business. We're going to find out a lot about ourselves in a hurry, so it's going to be a great test."
UW-Stout gets its season going this weekend at the Perkins Tipoff Tournament hosted by Bethel University in the Twin Cities.
The UW-Stout women's team starts its season this weekend at the Wisconsin Lutheran tournament. The Blue Devils will play an exhibition game Tuesday night at Winona State.
The UW-Eau Claire men tip off their season this week at the UW-Platteville Classic, Friday and Saturday. First-year head coach Matt Siverling says some early-season time on the road should pay dividends for his team.
"We play four of our first five games on the road," says Siverling, "our first home game isn't until November 28th. It'll be good to get away from Zorn and spend some time on the road with these guys and give them a chance to get to know each other in a different venue than just on a basketball court."
The Blugolds women's team will host the UWEC Tipoff Classic Friday and Saturday. UW-Eau Claire head coach Tonja Englund says fans should expect a different look from the Blugolds than in years past.
"This group, the way we went about recruiting, was an athletic, quick, north to south type of team," says Englund, "they can run and press and shoot the three and play really wide open. It's evolving, but it's there. In our scrimmages it's been exciting to watch it."
