Candles line neighborhood to honor man killed in shooting

MADISON (WKOW) --An east side Madison community is quietly remembering their neighbor who was shot to death on Friday.

The 500 block of South Baldwin Street will be lit in candlelight at night this week, in memory of Paul Heenan, 30.

Early Friday morning, Heenan was killed during a confrontation with a Madison police officer, who was responding to what he thought was a burglary. Police Chief Noble Wray says Heenan didn't obey Officer Stephen Heimsness' commands to get down during a struggle, and tried to grab his gun. That's when he was shot and killed. Later, police learned Heenan lived on the street and had accidentally walked into the wrong house while trying to get home.

Neighbors say they're hoping to get back to normal and move on as best they can after a long week of questions about what happened that night.

Those living on the block say through this gesture, they hope to show their strength as a community and their support for the neighbor they've lost.

This weekend, the neighborhood plans to hold a vigil and healing circle in memory of Paul Heenan. Stay with 27 News and wkow.com for a schedule of those community meetings.

Visitation and memorial services were also held Tuesday night for Heenan.
