MADISON (WKOW) -- Winter is upon us and if you want to avoid getting a ticket or a tow make sure you follow the alternate-side parking rules that go into effect early Thursday morning in Madison.
The restrictions are in effect beginning Thursday through March 15. Regardless of weather conditions, the rules will be in effect seven days a week.
Between the hours of 1 to 7 a.m., your car will need to be parked on the odd-numbered side of the street on odd-numbered days, and the even-numbered side on even-numbered days.
Violators could receive a $20 fine on most days, or a $60 fine when a snow emergency has been declared. That means anytime three inches of snow accumulation forces the city to plow streets.
According to the Wisconsin State Journal, officers issued more than 26,000 tickets between November 2011 and March 2012.
Alternate-side parking is enforced city-wide with the exception of the Snow Emergency Zone. The zone runs from North Park Street and Proudfit Street across Downtown to the Yahara River.
In that area, residents only need to follow alternate-side rules during a declared snow emergency and for two nights after that, though the city can add more days if necessary.
