Eau Claire (WQOW)- Some hunters are checking in with meat processors because they are concerned about the impact the milder weather could have on the deer they kill. They are concerned about bacteria and spoiled meat. A local meat processor says there are several things you can do.
"Once you shoot it, get it skinned-up properly, get it hung into a cool dry place and you can keep it there for a day or two. It's going to cool off enough at night to where it will hold," says Mike Maier, owner of Mike's Star Market in Eau Claire. "But the best is when you get a chance, get it into your processor."
Maier says it also helps to hang the deer in a shady spot, and put bags of ice or jugs of frozen water in the deer cavity to keep it cooled down.
