UPDATE: 4 killed when train crashes into Texas veterans parade

Posted:

MIDLAND, Texas (WKOW) -- Four people were killed and 17 hospitalized after a train crashed into a trailer carrying veterans during a parade.

According to the Midland Reporter-Telegram, seven of the victims are in critical condition and 10 are in stable condition.

A float carrying 24 veterans and their wives was hit by the train around 5 p.m.

Union Pacific spokesman Tom Lange says the train was sounding its horn before it hit the float. He says the crossing gate and lights were working at the time.

Lange didn't know if the train crew saw the float approaching.

The veterans were taking part in the ninth annual Show of Support parade. They were on their way to the Hunt for Heroes banquet. The newspaper reports that the wounded service men were to be treated to an all-expenses paid hunting trip this weekend, while their spouses were treated to a variety of activities in Midland.

He says there are "multiple, multiple" injuries and organizers still are trying to account for everyone.
