NEW YORK (WKOW) -- Hostess Brands, the maker of Twinkies, Devil Dogs and Wonder Bread will close its doors.
The company announced Friday that it asked a federal bankruptcy court for permission to close its operations. Nearly 18,500 workers will lose their jobs. The company will shut down 33 bakeries and 565 distribution centers nationwide.
The company blames a strike by bakers protesting a new contract as the reason for closing their doors. The company has given a 5:00 p.m. EST Thursday deadline for the bakers to return to work or face a shutdown of the company.
Hostess filed for bankruptcy in January. This was the second trip to bankruptcy court since 2004.
