Badgers beat the Buckeyes... in women's hockey

Posted:
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Using a pair of short-handed goals, the Wisconsin women's hockey team defeated Ohio State, 4-2, on Friday afternoon at Value City Arena.

With the win the Badgers improve to 8-3-2 (4-3-2-2 WCHA), now just five points shy of Ohio State (9-4-0, 7-4-0-0 WCHA) in second place.

Not a single one of Wisconsin's four goals came during an even strength scenario. The first goal was scored by Alev Kelter on the penalty kill after she poked the puck free along the blue line to create a breakaway for herself. Karley Sylvester scored the Badgers' second goal on a penalty shot, while Blayre Turnbull netted the game-winner while short-handed in the third period. The final goal was scored on an empty net by Madison Packer.

In all, only one goal in the contest was scored with five skaters on the ice for each side, as Ohio State scored an even strength goal in the second period. However, the Buckeyes did record the score just seconds after the Badgers returned a player from the penalty box.

A total of 18 penalties were called in the game, with 10 going against Wisconsin.

The Badgers started the game with four power play chances in the first period, but were unable to capitalize on any of their opportunities. Wisconsin ended the period out shooting the Buckeyes 13-3.

In the second period, the story line would be flipped. Ohio State earned five power-play chances and outshot the Badgers 19-12 -- though, it would be Wisconsin scoring first behind Kelter's short-handed goal, the Badgers' second of the season.

Seconds after Wisconsin took the lead, the Badgers were assessed a second penalty and were forced to play five-on-three. Ohio State grabbed its first goal of the game on the resulting power play. At the halfway mark of the second period, the Buckeyes made a rush down the ice as a Badger penalty expired. On the rush, Kari Schmitt dished the puck for a one-timer to Danielle Gagne in front of the net to put Ohio State up 2-1.

While on another penalty kill minute later, Sylvester created a breakaway for herself, but was tripped up on the charge resulting in a penalty shot. Sylvester didn't hesitate on the attempt and netted the Badgers' second penalty-shot goal of the season to tie the game at 2-2.

While on the penalty kill near the end of the third period, Brianna Decker created a turnover at the Badgers' blue line and went racing down the ice. She drove to the net from the left side and OSU goaltender Chelsea Knapp made the save. However, the puck slid loose to the far side of the crease and Turnbull came crashing in to tap in the game-winner.

In the final minute of regulation, Ohio State opted for an extra attacker, but Packer collected a turnover in the neutral zone and put the puck in the back of the empty net from center ice to seal the Wisconsin victory.

Badgers goaltender Alex Rigsby made a total of 31 saves in the game. With Ohio State scoring at the 4:51 mark of the second period, Rigsby's shutout streak came to an end after lasting 214:20 minutes, dating back to the Oct. 26 game against New Hampshire.

Knapp also made 31 saves in the effort for Ohio State.

Wisconsin and Ohio State will finish the weekend series tomorrow at 1 p.m. (CT).
