Homeless group defies request to leave park

MADISON (WKOW) -- The Occupy Madison group says it has no plans to move their tents after being asked to move again.

They say the county has now determined they are trespassing at the site where they have been staying, at Lake View Hill Park, on the 1200 block of Northport Drive in Madison.

They say Dane County officials asked them to be out of the park by 6:00 p.m. Saturday and move to Token Creek Park in the Town of Burke, if they are not going to take advantage of shelter opportunities.

"Token Creek is very isolated and the transportation challenges seem insurmountable," said Franjo Majstoric, one member of the Occupy group living in the park. "It's seven miles further from where we're camping now. No city buses run there and there is not a safe way to ride a bike to this location."

A group of roughly 25 homeless people had been staying at the original Occupy Madison site, an abandoned lot on East Washington, before they were asked to leave and moved to Lake View Hill Park last weekend.
