Badger women improve to 2-1 with win at Wash. St

PULLMAN, Wash. – Despite a late surge by the Cougars, the Wisconsin women's basketball team improved to 2-1 on the season with a 52-44 win at Washington State on Sunday afternoon.
After a slow first half, in which the Badgers led 22-15 at the break, UW went on an 8-0 run to open up a 30-15 lead with 18:04 to play in the game. Wisconsin upped its lead to 18 points twice, including at 39-21 with 10:46 to go. The Cougars used a 10-0 run to pull within eight (39-31) with 7:43 remaining. Washington State (1-3) used a 6-0 run to take the lead, 44-43, with 1:37 to play.

Two free throws by Morgan Paige gave Wisconsin the lead (45-44) with 1:21 to go and she followed that up with a layup with 41 seconds remaining to make it 47-44. Taylor Wurtz sank five straight free throws over the last 24 seconds to seal the win.
·         Taylor Wurtz led three Badgers in double figures with 13 points; Cassie Rochel added 11 points and Morgan Paige chipped in 10 points.
·         Rochel and AnnMarie Brown led all players with eight rebounds apiece. Wisconsin outrebounded Washington State 51-37
·         The Badgers were just 3-21 (.143) from 3-point range but shot 11-12 (.917) from the free throw line.
·         UW dished off 14 assists, compared to five for the Cougars, but turned the ball over 22 times.
Wisconsin returns home for two games this week, taking on Washington on Wednesday and Evansville on Sunday. Evansville is coached by former UW assistant coach Oties Epps.
