Fast-driving teen cited on the Beltline

MADISON (WKOW) -- Madison police say a 17-year-old driver was pulled over Thursday night and asked by the officer how fast he thought he was traveling. The teen said he couldn't even provide a ball park figure.

Officials say the officer asked about what the teen saw the speedometer register last, and the driver said 85 mph. The officer informed him, it was a bit higher than that.

Police say the teen was driving east on the Beltline. Near Whitney Way, he was clocked going 59 mph over the posted 55 mph speed limit. Doing the math, that's 114 mph.

Authorities say the 17-year old was very apologetic and said he needed to get home, and that was why he was "heavy-footed." The officer pointed out that had he been driving the speed limit, and not gotten pulled over, he would have been home already. Now, not only was he late, but he has a $429 ticket in hand.
