Managing asthma

MADISON (WKOW) -- Over 20 million Americans have asthma and it's important for them to know how to help manage the chronic disease.

Medical experts say asthma is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the airways that is characterized clinically by recurrent episodes of wheezing, dyspnea, chest tightness, and coughing.

Exercise is the most common trigger of breathing problems in people with asthma, which means asthma can highly affect athletes. But there are ways for athletes to monitor it.

A new technology to manage and measure airway inflammation in the lungs is being used by doctors now, including Dr. Don Bukstein, a pediatric allergist and pulmonologist in Madison.

Dr. Bukstein says this technology, called FeNO testing, helps him identify the most appropriate asthma action plan for each patient.

Dr. Bukstein joins us Wednesday night on 27 News at 5 to talk about ways to manage asthma.
